Contents of medical treatment
Wakayama Medical University has two surgery departments in the medical school: The First Surgery and The Second Surgery.
The Department of the First Surgery consists of three divisions: Cardiovascular Surgery, Respiratory Surgery, and Breast Surgery.
They are different fields, but they perform student education, medical research, and local health care support together, therefore they also perform medical treatment hand in hand in wards and for outpatients in the university hospital.
As you know, the leading cause of death in Japan is cancer and the second is heart disease. Regarding categories of cancer, lung and breast cancers are located in the top 5 cancers.
On the other hand, ischemic heart disease and aortic aneurysm that originates from arteriosclerosis, as well as valvular disease in the elderly also keep on increasing.
As described above, the three medical divisions have big roles individually and all our staff members are making an effort day and night to provide the best medical care for people in Wakayama prefecture and its surrounding area.
Cardiovascular Surgery accepts emergency operations 24 hours a day in addition to 4 to 5 cases/week of planned cardiac surgery. The total number of operations was 404 cases in 2014, including 239 cases of cardiac surgery and blood vessel surgery etc.
In Respiratory Surgery, we perform laparoscopic operations for 90% of surgeries. The Breast Surgery division positively performs breast reconstruction. The total number of operations in Respiratory and Breast Surgery was 448 cases in 2014.
